When Republicans get power, it doesn’t cross their mind to use it to improve the lives of everyday Americans. Instead, the only thing that they are thinking about is how to get more power. The latest plan that will redraw Missouri’s congressional map is the perfect example.
Missouri Republicans Are Making Fun of the Voters
In Missouri, the GOP-led Senate approved a plan that would significantly alter the borders of the 5th congressional district, which is a longtime Democrat stronghold. The intention is to secure another seat for the Republicans at the expense of Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. It is almost certain that Governor Mike Kehoe will sign the plan into law at the first opportunity he gets. Trump lauded the efforts on Truth Social, saying the plan “will help send an additional MAGA Republican to Congress.”
The plan was so controversial that it faced opposition from some Republicans. State Rep. Bryant Wolfin said that “there’s nothing conservative about using our supermajority to grab more power.” It was also on the receiving end of a lawsuit by the ACLU Voting Rights Project. Ming Cheung, senior staff attorney at the organization, called the new map “unconstitutional” and said that “voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.”
GOP is Scared That Their Cheap Rhetoric is Fizzling Out
With Donald Trump as their leader, the Republicans became blinded by power more than ever. But the truth is that they are also scared. With their cheap rhetoric fizzling out, they are desperately scrambling to use every possible tactic and protect themselves from the consequences of waning support from the voters. Missouri is just one of the states in which they are hoping to create artificial conservative districts.
Despite redistricting usually taking place after each 10-year census, Trump has been pushing the red states to speed up the process ahead of the mid-term elections. Texas and now Missouri have already acted on these orders, while there are initiatives to do the same in Ohio, Florida, Indiana, and Kansas.
Does Anyone Care About Democracy Anymore?
The recent actions by Republicans are obvious examples of gerrymandering. But don’t expect that to stop their power-crazed action. Democracy isn’t something they either know or care about.
