Organizers of a special initiative said that a cloth covering used to protect part of the Helags glacier in northern Sweden during the summer prevented up to 3.5 meters of the mountain from melting thanks to the initiative, the first of its kind in Scandinavia.
Global warming is reducing the size of glaciers around the world. For example, the glacier on Mount Kapnikice, Sweden’s highest mountain, lost two meters of its height in the past two years only, according to Reuters.
The fabric covering experiment was conducted at Mount Helges, above the Swedish mountains, south of the Arctic Circle.
