On 23rd October 2024, Suchir released a case analysis of the training program on his website. In the article, When does generative AI qualify for fair use? He mentioned, “The process of training a generative model involves making copies of copyrighted data. If these copies are unauthorized, this could potentially be considered copyright infringement”, pointing directly at ChatGPT’s training process.
After this incident, he was known as the OpenAI whistleblower who stood up against malpractice. But a month later, he was found mysteriously dead in his San Francisco apartment.
Local police announced a suicide case, and “no evidence of foul play” was found during the initial investigation. But Suchir’s parents were completely dissatisfied with this conclusion. They continued the investigation with an independent investigator to get into the details of their son’s murder.
Elon Musk and his interest in teaming up with Mark Zuckerberg

Though he has always spoken of humanity’s concerns and AI ethics, Musk has now demanded an FBI investigation. This demand brings urgency and credibility to the case. But this raises a very important question: Is Musk genuinely seeking justice for Suchir, or is this part of his ongoing rivalry with OpenAI and Sam Altman?
As Musk has recently built his new AI chatbot called xAI, anything that destabilizes OpenAI works in his favor. It’s hard to overlook his motives here.
But there’s an interesting twist to the plot when Mark Zuckerberg is seen shaking hands with Elon Musk to bring the Open AI down.
The OpenAI Transformation that was hard to digest
The company was initially focused on open-source AI and “AI for Humanity,” but as ChatGPT started leveling up, there was a sudden shift to premium subscriptions and corporate secrecy.
Meta CEO Zuckerberg and X owner Musk have ideological conflicts about everything from artificial intelligence to how they run their social media platforms. While that feud has lasted for a decade—and has even threatened to turn physical – it was shocking to see the two tech billionaires now agree on at least one thing: their competitor, OpenAI, should remain a nonprofit.
Meta also urged the California attorney general on Friday to block OpenAI’s move to become a for-profit company, accusing Sam Altman’s organization of “exploiting” its status to secure billions in funding.
The Musk-Zuck Friendship: a win-win situation
While both companies are playing the “we are the responsible AI company” card, this alliance could be strategic. If a tricky player like OpenAI destabilizes, it could serve as a killer move in Mark Zuckerberg’s favor. Musk is known to play the louder part to grab media attention, while Zuckerberg prefers a more polished approach.
Suchir’s death has surely taken on many dimensions as he dared to go against tech politics and highlight loopholes, only to be silenced. If AI is shaping our future, shouldn’t we demand transparency at its core?
