Donald Trump V/s Kamala Harris in Presidential Elections 2024.
The US 2024 presidential elections were not just about the candidates, the policies or the personalities, but the majority of results were determined by pets. A recent survey by AP VOTECAST reported that dog owners supported President-elect Donald Trump, while cat owners were divided between Trump and Kamala Harris.
Pet owners made up about two-thirds of voters, a larger group that showed a striking divide. Trump received strong support from dog owners which helped him to secure his victory.
Female cat owners (without dogs) supported Harris, with 60% of them voting for her, whereas male cat owners tended to support Trump. On the other hand, dog owners, including those who owned both cats and dogs, also leaned towards Trump. About 60% of male voters who owned only dogs were on the team ‘Trump’. Other owners, who made up about 30% of the electorate, formed a significant voting bloc that helped Trump on brownie points.
Cat owners only represented 15% of voters; this group didn’t have much of a hold in the outcome, they were a smaller fraction of the voting pool, and although they were divided, they didn’t shift the overall election trend. This highlights the fact that dog owners were a much more influential group in 2024.
Party loyalty was another crucial element in determining the voting preferences of most dog owners identified as Republican with around 60% of male dog owners and 50% of female dog owners aligned with the GOP (Grand Old Party). The divide showed a broader party loyalty and cultural significance with ‘Pets of America’.
Although Trump made some controversial statements about immigrants stealing and eating pets these remarks didn’t appear to sway pet owners’ votes. It’s worth noting that neither Trump nor Harris owned pets during the campaign, which meant they missed an opportunity to engage with pet-loving voters. But this will lead to future campaigns and their benefits from more direct appeal to pet owners who make up such a large part of the voting population.
With dog owners forming such a large bloc and overwhelming support for Trump, these results suggest Democrats need to put more effort into appealing to the dog owners. The key focus for future Democratic campaigns may hold some potential to address these factors but both parties have potential benefits from recognising these patterns and influencing pet owners in the upcoming elections.
