On Wednesday, OpenAI released a slew of updates for their GPT models. Among them was a suite of new tools that help in the development of custom AI agents.
Think of AI agents as people that companies hire for specific tasks, like accountants, coders, and customer support. AI agents can transform ChatGPT into specialized, task-oriented tools. For instance, a developer can develop a ChatGPT AI agent specifically for data entry tasks.
Custom AI agents are a game-changer for almost every industry, and maybe the day when AI replaces human employees is drawing closer.
Custom AI Agents Are Replacing Jobs Faster Than Expected
Last week, an AI start-up Sensay posted a job opening for a full-stack developer on LinkedIn. Nothing unusual in that, but instead of hiring humans it was actually hiring a custom AI Agent. In an interview with Entrepreneur, Sensay made it clear that they are not expecting an AI to apply for the job. Rather, AI Engineers will submit their code for an AI Agent.
This AI Agent will be integrated with the company via and will perform the job of a full-stack developer. The agent will write the code, test the code, fix the bugs, and write technical documents faster and more efficiently than any human. The company will pay the AI Engineer a fixed annual salary in exchange for the custom AI agent.
Users from the subreddit LinkedInLunatics also pointed out that landing a job from LinkedIn was already a difficult task and now they have to compete with AI agents also. This comes at a time when Americans feel less confident about their job security than they have in the past ten years.
The Truth Behind AI Fear-Mongering
The fear-mongering behind “AI will replace workers” is nothing new. The same was said about computers in the 1980s, even earning the term ‘Computerphobia.’ Similarly, in the 2000s, during the dot-com bubble era, the same fears surrounded the Internet.
Studies show that AI and AI agents can affect more than 800 million jobs globally by 2030. The disruption will affect not only low-skilled workers but those in specialized fields like healthcare, banking, and legal services.
However, the World Economic Forum makes it clear that while AI will displace 75 million jobs, it will also create 133 million new jobs. That’s a net positive of 58 million jobs, although the workers will have to adapt to AI and custom AI agents. The Chairman of Sinovation Ventures also said that AI will not replace jobs, but it will change the nature of work.
