Bumbling Behemoth: Is This Delay the End of Meta’s Success in the AI Landscape?

1 Mins read

LLAMA 4 Behemoth, an AI LLM model from Meta, is described as “a teacher model that demonstrates advanced intelligence among models in its class” by the official Meta website. For the uninitiated, this means that the large language model AI nicknamed “Behemoth” analyzes and understands text, images, and video data.

This fourth-generation LLAMA 4 Behemoth also supports multiple languages. Not only this, but Behemoth will also be used as a teacher for future models, making it the crown jewel of Meta’s projects. Until April of the same year, this recent technology was being lauded for surpassing its competitors in its infancy.

The Higher the Pedestal, the Harder the Fall

However, on May 16, 2025, Meta announced the delayed launch of LLAMA 4 Behemoth, originally planned for the LLAMACON in April 2025, a conference dedicated to generative AI.  A second delay, from June to an unspecified time later in Autumn, has made things even worse for the tech giant as speculation runs rampant about the reason for the delay and subsequently, Meta’s competence in the current AI landscape.

While some think that this delay might be due to concern for safety and ethics, others fear that millions are being invested in a model that has hit the metaphorical glass ceiling. While investors and enthusiasts alike are all abuzz with opinions on what this roadblock could mean for the future of AI, Meta grapples with the implications of a potential insurmountable defeat.

The Cause of the Delay: A Temporary Glitch or Unmitigated Disaster

According to the Wall Street Journal, the delay was due to the reservations of engineers regarding the capabilities of the LLAMA 4 Behemoth. The minds behind the development are unsure whether the technology has succeeded its contemporaries enough to warrant public release.

Contributing to these technical difficulties may be the departure of 11 of the 14 original researchers working on Meta’s AI projects, leaving LLAMA 4 Behemoth in the hands of new staff.  LLMs like Behemoth require large amounts of energy and resources, which is why this delay is also raising alarm over the large amounts of money going into AI development. If Meta is to regain its lost footing, Behemoth must be on par with, if not ahead of, its competitors.
