Cybersecurity Acceleration: Redesigning Threat Detection and Response

3 Mins read

In 2025, the cybersecurity environment is extremely demanding, with sophisticated threats such as ransomware hitting critical infrastructure, phishing attacks aimed at employees, and lateral movement taking advantage of network weaknesses. Organizations continue to be plagued by the same challenges: Security Operations Centers (SOCs) are flooded with false-positive alerts, manual processes delay incident response, and mixed-up visibility in hybrid environments creates holes in defenses. For industries such as finance and healthcare, where ramifications are grave, it is paramount to have accurate, scalable, and proactive solutions to keep ahead of the evolving threat landscape.

Traditional cybersecurity solutions like Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools, or manual vulnerability scans often have limitations. SIEMs generate noise with as many as 40 percent of alerts being classified as false-positives that waste analysts’ time. EDR solutions are bypassable by advanced evasion techniques; human risk assessment is tough and prone to error, with threats often unaddressed. The weaknesses call for the implementation of innovative regimes that elevate the level of intelligence in detection, accelerate processing, and cement defenses against the changing dynamics of threats.

Sumanshu Sohal, a FireEye SOC Analyst with mastery in Cybersecurity from University of Maryland, has put in commendable efforts in addressing some of these issues. His areas of interest include exercising excellence in threat detection and automating compliance with forensic visibility. He has developed solutions using the SIEM platform, EDR tool, and scripting tools that have directly addressed industrial pain points and have helped organizations stay ahead of cyber threats.

Among his notable achievements is the writing of Python-based automation scripts that interface with endpoint security solution APIs to perform live endpoint module health checks and policy validation on about 5,000 endpoints. This brought an end to manual compliance checks and slashed time spent while mitigating against inconsistent policy enforcement across the nine different business units. By automating these key processes, the scripts empower leadership with accurate real-time situational awareness of data supporting audit readiness and ranking risks with respect to organizational effectiveness and compliance.

“Automation enables leaders to move from chasing alerts to establishing stronger defenses” says Sohal.

Some of the other major initiatives refined SIEM correlation rules with Helix and improved the threat detection accuracy cutting false positives in advance by 30%. This optimization of analyst workloads then enabled faster triaging of complex incidents like malware infections and lateral movement. His work in validating and onboarding third-party cloud log sources to enrich log visibility significantly enhanced their forensic capabilities to track attackers’ movement and quickly mitigate risks.

Sohal also led quarterly risk scanning using Tenable IO, finding vulnerabilities and tracking remediation timelines based on severity. His proactive thinking about optimizing network architecture supported increased threat-detection coverage while streamlining data flows and positioning evidence collectors in on-premise and hybrid environments. These initiatives addressed the industry’s problem of fragmented visibility by delivering a unified defense approach.

“Proactive monitoring is the backbone of a resilient security posture”, he emphasizes.

Sohal’s contributions continue through technical expertise and certifications. His study of Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) evasion techniques, as part of a red-team simulation project, identified behavioral detection weaknesses and contributed to modeling and awareness of threats in cybersecurity. His work has impacted the methods of evaluating EDR effectiveness. He is CompTIA Security+ and Splunk certified (Intro to Dashboards, Intro to Splunk, Using Fields & Visualization), which showcases his technical prowess. The development of a thorough AWS-based cloud security migration plan for a small company that involved IAM policies, data encryption, and network security controls generated a strong foundation for secure cloud deployment, further solidifying his footprint in the domain.

Sohal’s innovations have demonstrated measurable impacts. His endpoint automation scripts cut compliance check time by over 50%; automating endpoint management over around 5,000 endpoints provided consistency in policy enforcement across nine business units. The SIEM optimizations that cut 30% of false positives also enhanced analyst productivity, allowing for more concentrated work on high-priority threats. His network architecture optimization boosted threat detection coverage by 25% for high-value asset protection in on-premises and hybrid deployments. These successes are congruent with proactive cybersecurity objectives and have benefited organizational efficiency and audit readiness.

All nine of the company’s business units have adopted his solutions and methodologies, demonstrating their scalability and effectiveness. In addressing deficiencies in process and detection lags from manual workflows, his solutions have fortified the security operations to counter threats more efficiently and efficiently. These endeavors fortified the organization’s security posture and henceforth the engagement of compliance and operational resilience in the ever-evolving threat landscape.

Sumanshu Sohal’s work is in line with automation and proactive defense. His automation model has centralized endpoint compliance in nine business units, allowing for consistent policy application. His SIEM optimizations that cut false positives by 30% have improved threat detection effectiveness in the organization. All these tools have fortified defenses, allowing for quicker detection and mitigation of threats. By solving key operational issues, his work enables a strong security posture that is adjusted to changing threats.

His cloud security migration plan, intended for a small company moving to AWS, was an all-encompassing model of secure cloud adoption, including IAM policies, data encryption, and network security controls. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, his emphasis on scalable, data-driven solutions keeps the organizations agile, establishing trust through sound security practices.
