Crafting Tomorrow’s Data: A Visionary’s Mission to Unite the Globe

4 Mins read

In 2025, as 97% of global businesses rely on data to drive decisions, the stability and security of database systems underpin economic and social progress. Yet, with cyberattacks costing the world $6 trillion annually, the challenge of maintaining reliable, secure, and scalable data infrastructure is immense. Murali Natti, a 20-year experience as database architect and DevOps leader, has answered this challenge, providing technical solutions that enable organizations and promote communities everywhere. From designing robust database systems to facilitating knowledge sharing, his efforts see that technology is used as a bridge to possibility, security, and trust.

Murali Natti began his career after completing a Master of Computer Applications at Andhra University, India. After four years of working in India, he relocated to the US in 2009 to engage more directly with international business environments, a move that shaped his global perspective on data infrastructure. His areas of expertise range from PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, Cassandra, SingleStore, Kafka, and Elasticsearch, with accompanying certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle Certified Associate (OCA), SQL Certified, and Python, Generative AI, and Prompt Engineering specialized courses. His technological skills combined with his interest in creating community impact led him to be a central figure in data-driven ecosystem shaping.

Murali Natti’s technical contributions are both innovative and far-reaching. He spearheaded a PostgreSQL Database as a Service (DBaaS) platform, automating provisioning and maintenance to streamline data management for critical applications. This solution enabled organizations to scale rapidly, serving millions of users while reducing costs, resources that could then be redirected to community initiatives like digital education platforms. His efforts with PostgreSQL extensions, like TimescaleDB for time series and PostGIS for geospatial use, further enriched system functionality, supporting applications ranging from smart cities to environmental monitoring.

A milestone was his work on Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migrations for multi-terabyte databases with Oracle Golden Gate. Through bi-directional replication between regions, he reduced downtime to minutes, providing uninterrupted service to global users. For a high-risk project in China, Murali Natti created an Alibaba Cloud infrastructure from the ground up, deploying RDS Apsara clusters to provide secure, high-performance data services. This project demonstrated how technical skills can prevail over logistical and regulatory hurdles to reach diverse populations.

Security is another pillar of his work. Working as a database security lead, Murali Natti had in place solid security measures for PostgreSQL, such as credcheck extension, MTLS certificates, and pgAudit, in addition to Oracle Data Guard and Real Application Cluster (RAC) technologies. These security measures insulated sensitive data, building users’ trust in the age of rising cyber attacks. His solutions for backups, utilizing tools such as pgbarman, walg, and pgbackrest, provided data integrity, allowing for quick recovery from disruptions.

Murali Natti’s auto-failover solutions for PostgreSQL transformed system reliability. By designing mechanisms to switch to standby databases instantly, he boosted uptime for critical applications, ensuring healthcare providers could access patient records, financial systems could process transactions, and educational platforms could deliver uninterrupted learning. His tuning of database parameters, vacuum settings, JVM garbage collection, compaction strategies, and bloom filters resolved performance bottlenecks, allowing systems to handle high transaction rates.

His expertise included Cassandra, in which he handled high-scale clusters, scaling nodes, replication factor tuning, and workload rebalancing. This provided low-latency performance for real-time applications such as e-commerce, which benefited consumers worldwide. Murali Natti also introduced data pipelines from RDBMS databases to Kafka and Elasticsearch, providing real-time analytics for use cases such as fraud detection and supply chain optimization. His DLB and DSLB architectures further enhanced performance and costs, enhancing organizational capacity for social impact.

More recently, Murali Natti has been using Generative AI to make data processing better by adding AI-driven understanding to database systems. This helps people make quicker decisions, like predicting health patterns and improving how disaster relief supplies are managed, showing his advanced way of thinking about worldwide problems.

“Technology has to catch up with the needs of society. My research is about designing systems that are secure, scalable, and inclusive for everyone,” asserts Murali Natti, a testimony to his inclusivity-driven approach to innovation.

Murali Natti’s technical solutions have profound social benefits. His scalable, resilient systems enable organizations to deliver critical services. In healthcare, his optimizations ensure timely access to patient data, improving diagnoses. In finance, secure databases support safe transactions, fostering economic inclusion. In education, reliable platforms bridge learning gaps, particularly in underserved regions. By lowering operational expenditures through hardware benchmark testing and capacity management, he has made funds available for initiatives such as rural internet access and digital literacy programs.

His experience with Kafka and Elasticsearch pipelines drove real-time applications that solve societal demands, like tracking environmental data or identifying financial fraud. These solutions increase transparency and efficiency, positively impacting communities worldwide. His customer-first mentality, developed over ten years, guarantees solutions meet real-world requirements, establishing trust among stakeholders such as QA, Dev, SRE, and System Admin teams.

Murali Natti’s 24/7 infrastructure support model, managing onsite and offshore teams, has created a resilient workforce capable of handling high-growth environments. His adherence to ITIL workflows, Change Management, Incident Management, and Problem Management ensures operational stability, minimizing disruptions for end-users. These efforts collectively strengthen the technological foundation that communities rely on.

He has been working for Apple for the last 18 years (12 years as a full-time employee and 6 years as a contractor) but took on challenging projects, a variety of database technologies like RDBMS, NoSQL, MemSQL, Distributed, OpenSource, etc., to motivate himself. Every project is challenging, kind of like a startup, and requires coming up with innovative solutions to build teams from scratch.

A Rollback Strategy Using Logical Replication for PostgreSQL Major Version Upgrades by Murali Natti in 2023 has been a worldwide reference for database administrators. By explaining a low-risk upgrade technique via logical replication and standby databases, he enabled organizations to embrace new technology with confidence and avoid downtime. Small organizations especially have been the beneficiaries, staying competitive without expensive IT overhauls.

His initiation of the first Postgres Day conference brought platform users together to collaborate on sophisticated methods, democratizing access to expert solutions. His work empowered small companies and startups to harness state-of-the-art solutions, creating a level technological playing field. As a mentor, Murali Natti has established infrastructure support teams, having passed on automation scripts and monitoring tool knowledge in Logstash and Kibana. His ethic of knowledge-sharing has raised a global network of professional talent.

“Knowledge is the key to progress. Empowering others, we make the world a place where technology benefits everyone,” Murali Natti emphasizes, highlighting his commitment to common progress.

Murali Natti’s professional life showcases how technical skill can advance the common good. His work on database architecture, security, and analytics has overcome tough challenges and opened doors of opportunity for communities globally. From making seamless services possible to teaching future technologists, his achievements build reliability, inclusivity, and trust.

Murali Natti’s work provides a guide for creating fair technology as the need for global data increases. His skill in combining strong technical knowledge with a focus on people means his solutions address current problems and help create a future where data brings everyone together and gives them more power.
