After 22 seasons of sporting excellence, seven-time Super Bowl winner and NFL legend Tom Brady has officially announced his retirement via a social media post.

The 44-year-old, who has been described as the greatest of all time, took to his Instagram account on Tuesday to post a photo and a statement explaining his decision to retire from the sport. Brady wrote, “This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Brady is most famous for his 20-season tenure with the New England Patriots, with whom he won six Super Bowls. He played out the last two seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In a tweet that Brady wrote in the wake of his initial statement, he said, “Thank you Patriots Nation. I’m beyond grateful. Love you all.”

After being snubbed by talent scouts early on in his career, Brady became a man determined to prove them wrong. The hunger to win and be the greatest of all time has been his defining trait throughout his career. His obsession with preparation, focusing on every single aspect of the game, and above all, winning, has seen him lift the Super Bowl a record number of times. Brady won four Super Bowls after he turned 37 and has probably got a couple more seasons in him, but he has decided to quit on his own terms and bow out while still on top.

Brady’s legacy is immense and perhaps will never be equaled. His announcement on social media triggered an outpouring of affection and emotions from both fans and celebrities alike.

Dwayne Johnson wrote, “Congratulations, my brother. What a historic career. Now go enjoy the next chapter w/ that same passion, zest & manna.” Shaquille O’ Neal joked, “No man get your butt up and do one more year,” before adding, “Love u bro absolute joy to watch.”

Olympian Michael Phelps wrote, “Congrats bro! Enjoy the next chapter,” as golfer Justin Thomas proved what a Brady fan he is when he wrote, “You’re the best TB. Nobody is better in so many facets of life! Appreciate you being an inspiration to so many.” Soccer legend Kaka echoed the thoughts of every sports fan on the planet when he commented, “What a privilege to have seen an athlete like you.”
