Brock Purdy Signing Allows San Francisco 49ers To Remain Competitive

1 Mins read

The San Francisco 49ers recently signed franchise quarterback Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension. It is the largest pay raise in league history at the moment, though this is surely going to change within the next couple of years. Regardless, Purdy’s presence in San Francisco allows the franchise to continue competing for a Super Bowl. While it is a significant hit to their cap space, securing a quarterback for the foreseeable future with Purdy’s upside is more than worth it.

Brock Purdy Has Bucked The “System Quarterback” Narrative

Ever since Brock Purdy took over the starting job in San Francisco, the label of “system quarterback” has followed him. For those who aren’t aware of the term, a system quarterback is a player who is only good on the field due to the scheme and team that he plays for. Purdy began his starting days on a loaded 49ers roster with tons of talent. However, he continues to prove that he’s more than just a system player.

In 2023, he threw 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions while taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl—a game they unfortunately lost in overtime against the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2024, the team was ravaged by injuries, so their record didn’t look good. Yet he still threw 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Despite coming off a down year, he’s routinely helped improve the 49ers’ chances of winning games.

The 49ers Have A Roster To Clean Up

Brock Purdy’s long-term stay will absolutely give the team a chance at winning a Super Bowl within the next five seasons. The problem won’t be the quarterback; it will be securing a new wave of talent around him. They already traded receiver Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a nasty injury that forced him out for the majority of the 2024 campaign.

San Francisco will need to shore up other roster problems to give Brock Purdy a chance at another Super Bowl run. Thankfully, they have re-signed both George Kittle and Fred Warner to extensions alongside him. Entering 2025, they don’t appear to be a Super Bowl team, but a lot can change very quickly in the NFL, especially when a franchise quarterback is in play.
