According to many, Zohran Mamdani did the unthinkable. Despite a short political career, populist platform, and lack of support inside the Democratic Party, Mamdani resoundingly beat former New York governor Andrew Cuomo to become the new mayor of New York City. His win signals the rise of class politics and the need for change in the Democratic Party.
Voters Are Tired of Big Promises and No Delivery
Mamdani didn’t make big splash promises that he has no intention of fulfilling. Instead, he focused on the things that concern the citizens of New York City and could make life better for ordinary Americans. He promised to freeze the rent in rent-controlled apartments, make bus transportation and childcare free, and start a program to make groceries cheaper. These are all the things that are manageable with the right approach and determination.
Voters recognized that these promises are coming from one of them and not a millionaire who could never know what it’s like to struggle to pay for rent or not have enough money for groceries. It started with NYC, but the rise of class politics is inevitable. People are tired of having their lives controlled by big corporations and billionaires who never wear their shoes. It might be a turning point for the left, making it recognize the value of real issues.

Democratic Party Should Take Notice
The Democrats’ top establishment never fully stood behind Mamdani. In their eyes, he was someone who was taking the idea of socialism too far. But his win should make them think twice about the path they will take moving forward.
It is becoming obvious that the Democratic Party needs changes within. They are spending too much time complaining about Donald Trump and not doing enough to offer an alternative. The likes of Mamdani bring a fresh approach that resonates with common people, who are the ones who actually go out to vote and give the power to their representatives. If Democrats really want to save the U.S. from the MAGA world, they should finally start listening to what voters have to say.
Two Paths Forward
There are two possible paths forward. One is to write of Mamdani’s win as a perfect set of circumstances and do more of the same. Another is to embrace the class politics ideas and give it a try. It can’t be worse than this.
