Trump’s Legal Draft Turns Law Firms Into His Foot Soldiers

1 Mins read

Since the first day he resumed office, President Donald Trump has signed 143 executive orders. As many expected, a lot of them have been controversial, and the “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement” order is not an exception.

Trump signed the order on April 28th, and it mandates private law firms to provide legal defense to police officers accused of misconduct. While it may seem like a good order, the reality is that it is conscripting the legal sector to serve his agenda.

The order undermines the judiciary’s independence. Trump is not satisfied with being the commander-in-chief of the armed forces; he wants to command private law firms as well.

Nine major law firms pledged to provide pro bono services in support of the administration’s causes after this order. The president even bragged that these firms paid him a lot of money in the form of legal fees. If you are wondering how much these services are worth, it’s a mind-blowing $940 million.

On the surface, it looks like these firms chose to do so voluntarily. However, we all know that they did so because they felt threatened. After all, Trump said he would cancel federal contracts and revoke security clearance for firms representing his opposition.

If you think we’re exaggerating, it’s obvious you haven’t heard of the executive order that targeted Perkins Coie. So, we are not surprised that these firms chose to become Trump’s foot soldiers just to avoid a similar situation.

Implications for Civil Rights

When police officers are accused of misconduct, it is within the boundaries of the citizens’ civil rights. This is why many people are shocked that the president is focusing his efforts on defending such officers. Yes, sometimes the officers are innocent, but this executive order questions the principles of accountability and justice.

Moreover, it does not even deal with systemic civil rights and police misconduct issues. Instead, it is potentially protecting officers from the consequences of their misconduct. This action blurs the lines between independent legal practice and government mandates. It can destroy everything we’ve worked for as a country in upholding civil rights.
