Trump’s Presidential Address Turns Ugly: Lawmaker Al Green Expelled for Speaking Out!

2 Mins read

Trump’s recent presidential address to the joint session of Congress was a historic event in America’s political landscape. Not only was his speech the longest in modern American history, but it was also unique for being filled with taunts and insults. The brunt of his 90-minute speech was directed at former President Joe Biden, whom he blamed for all the ills America is facing.

However, in a rare show of spine, Democrats did not share the exuberance shown by Republicans for their dear leader. One Democrat, Al Green, took things to the next level by heckling Donald Trump during the early hours of his presidential address. For his indiscretion against the ‘King of America,’ Al Green was kicked out of Congress.

While Republicans rejoiced at Al Green’s expulsion, experts believe it can severely affect American democracy.

Republicans Humiliate Al Green After He Dares to Challenge Trump

When Trump boldly announced that he has the public mandate to cut Medicaid for millions of Americans, Al Green stood up and shouted, “You don’t have a mandate!” However, his voice was immediately suppressed by Republicans shouting “U-S-A!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, in a bid to maintain decorum, ordered Green’s removal from the floor. Republican lawmakers couldn’t help but mock Green by singing ‘Hey, hey, hey, goodbye’ as he was escorted out by the sergeant-at-arms.

In the middle of the presidential address, Republicans also introduced a censure resolution against Al Green. The resolution was passed swiftly in a mostly party-line vote.

A censure resolution in Congress is basically a form of public humiliation carried out by the house speaker. The Speaker reads out a resolution rebuking a member for a specified misconduct.

Green’s Expulsion From the Presidential Address Is Problematic

Green’s expulsion is not just about maintaining decorum but also an attempt to suppress dissenting voices on the Congress floor. Although Green’s actions were seen as disruptive, they were still a form of protest against unfair policies. This also serves as a blueprint for handling future disruptions, particularly those involving dissent and opposition.

Al Green’s expulsion from the presidential address, along with the censure resolution against him, also carries symbolic significance. It is meant to silence any dissent against President Trump and his policies. Green is not the first lawmaker to face consequences for speaking out against Trump. Earlier, lawmaker Robert Garcia received a ‘warning’ letter from the DOJ for criticizing Trump.
