Slashed, Silenced, and Sidelined: Inside Trump’s War on the National Science Foundation

2 Mins read

Even before Donald Trump stepped into office, he was a loud and proud science denier. During his first presidency, there were subtle shifts in priorities, like downplaying the COVID crisis or ignoring the CDC on vaccination. However, Trump 2.0 launched a full-blown crusade against science and research. In just the first 100 days of Trump, public communication across HHS went dark. It started with institutions like the CDC, NIH, and FDA, and soon the chainsaw turned to the National Science Foundation.

First came the executive orders axing anything related to DEI, environmental justice, gender inclusivity, basically, anything Trump could slap a “woke” label on. The ripple effects hit science, too. The CDC deleted thousands of web pages overnight. The National Science Foundation froze crucial grants to comply with the new regime.

And then came the Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire man-child Elon Musk. His version of “efficiency” meant mass layoffs. Thousands of scientists, analysts, and staff were booted with the stroke of a pen. It was a systematic dismantling of public institutions designed to advance science and improve lives for everyone.

The Fall Of The National Science Foundation

Established in 1950, the National Science Foundation was built to fund foundational research across every corner of science and engineering. And it delivered. Big Time. From organ transplants and genetic research to artificial intelligence, smartphones, the internet, extreme weather alerts, American Sign Language, cybersecurity, and even Duolingo, the NSF has quietly shaped the modern world.

But under the Trump administration, that legacy has come under fire.

Through a mix of political strong-arming and bureaucratic chaos, the administration chipped away at the agency’s influence, putting the future of American research and innovation at serious risk. The NSF’s gold-standard peer-review process, built to support rigorous, high-impact science, is now hanging by a thread. Thanks to abrupt staff cuts, frozen grants, and program defunding, the very machinery of discovery is grinding down.

While this was going on in the background, Elon Musk’s chainsaw fell on the National Science Foundation. Under DOGE, thousands of scientists and support staff have been pushed out, destabilizing the core operations of the foundation. And it’s not just the structure of the institute that is cracking, but its soul.

In addition, studies deemed to be violating Trump’s executive orders on DEI and environmental justice, regardless of their scientific merit, impact, or urgency, are being abruptly terminated at particularly high rates.

Nationwide Consequences of Gutting the NSF

Trump’s gutting of the National Science Foundation is already sending shockwaves across the country. One study estimates that a 50% cut in federal science funding could eventually shrink the U.S. GDP by 7.6%.

Industries like tech, agriculture, and energy rely heavily on funding from the National Science Foundation to innovate and stay competitive. When those grants disappear, entire ecosystems of businesses, labs, and service providers are affected.

Critics warn that slashing National Science Foundation funding is also a direct attack on education and workforce development. Of the nearly 1,400 NSF grants terminated, worth nearly $1 billion, over half were tied to education programs. These programs mainly focused on getting more women and minorities into STEM. Graduate fellowships were also slashed in half, sending a brutal blow to the country’s future science leaders.

Cuts to the National Science Foundation are wrecking the pipeline that helps students move from community colleges into science and tech careers. Junior researchers who rely heavily on early-career funding from NSF are getting hit the hardest. Critics warn that this could lead to a long-term talent crisis.

But it’s not just limited to science and research. National Science Foundation researchers are sounding the alarm. Without solid federal support, America will struggle to respond to pandemics, climate disasters, or cyberattacks.
