In the mind of Donald Trump, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is a big step towards making America “great” again. But in reality, it will be another nail in the coffin of the notion that the United States is the “greatest country in the world.” Instead, it will be seen as a country that leaves its citizens starving while increasing the wealth of the top 1%.
Having Food on the Table Will Be a Privilege of the Few
The “One Big Beautiful Bill” promises all sorts of tax breaks, mostly for those who don’t actually need them. However, the money for that has to come from somewhere. While creating the bill, Trump and his GOP lackeys focused on slashing the funding of social programs, including Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Apparently, having medical care and food on the table is no longer considered a basic human right.
There will definitely be less food on the table for Americans thanks to Trump. The SNAP, which serves 42 million people, will lose $186 billion in funding over the next 10 years. Additionally, a lot of people will lose access to it. The changes to the program will make it harder for low-income families to qualify and retain their access, while certain groups, like immigrants and asylum seekers, will be ineligible. The estimate is that around 5 million people won’t be able to count on receiving food relief.
America is Already Having a Hunger Problem
You would think that hunger problems belong to some other parts of the world. But America is already experiencing it in its own house. Report from U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that 13.5% of households, which equates to 18 million, in the United States were facing food insecurity in 2023. Feeding America says that 47 million people experience “daily challenges with hunger.” The issue particularly affects the youngest part of the population, with almost 20% of children experiencing food insecurity.
The situation will only get worse. Millions will lose access to SNAP. Millions more will struggle even with the program. The One Big Beautiful Bill limits the increase of benefits in the future regardless of skyrocketing food costs. People will need to budget even more or eat unhealthy food. Also, states will be tasked with sharing the cost in the future, something that will most certainly hamper the program even more and lead to unequal treatment.
Trump Wants You to Get Used to an Empty Stomach
Trump probably never had to experience how it feels to have an empty stomach. Neither did his Republican colleagues and wealthy friends. But he wants you to get used to it because it’s obvious that he has no issue starving Americans if it serves his goals.
