John Oliver is a result of the personalities of a knowledgeable investigative journalist and a rampant comedian merged into one. Known for his ability to take radical stances against corrupt institutions, yet lighten up the mood with his humor simultaneously, John Oliver has developed a considerable fan following over the years.
This British American celebrity has won 21 Emmy Awards, 2 Peabody Awards, 8 Producers Guild of American Awards and 7 Writers Guild of America Awards to date. However, in addition to his collection of awards he has also earned multiple retaliatory suits and enemies for countless remarks against political and social institutions.
One of his most popular shows known for being a platform for justice against corrupt corporation is the Last Week Tonight on HBO that debuted in 2014, and has now been renewed for its 12th season in 2025.
Who Has John Oliver Offended Now?
When you are John Oliver making the kind of comments he does, there are bound to be repercussions. Even when his satire is based in real facts, he has often been sued by the same corporations who are the subjects of his show.
The most recent to join the list of suits against him, is a defamation suit filed by Dr. Brian Morley (former medical director AmeriHealth Caritas, 2017). The suit is claiming damages in excess of $75,000 and the retraction of the defamatory comments made against Dr. Brian Morley.
This comes in response to “Last Week Tonight’s” episode of April 2024, during which John Oliver quoted Dr. Brian that it was okay for a patient with bowel issues to, “be a little dirty for a couple of days”.
Another claim was the denying of required care (medicine supply, nurse visits and diaper changes) to a young man with mental impairment who was in wheelchair.
This episode was largely focused on the inefficiencies of Medicaid (a government funded health insurance program), its red tape for onboarding of patients, dropping deserving patients uninformed and providing subpar medical care.
There’s No Smoke Without Fire
John Oliver may be sarcastic, notoriously comic about sensitive matters, but he is not someone who would make false claims to become a “click bait sensation” on the internet.
Medicaid has been in the news consistently for their “unwinding”, since April 2023 that ends coverage for “ineligible” individuals or those who can’t fulfill their “procedural requirements”. Suddenly people previously eligible no longer meet the requirements, if they do, they have to que on their snail-paced website to fill the form, and if by some miracle that happens, they receive care which is a small percentage of what they were committed.
Even if John Oliver quoted Dr. Brian out of context on his show, what sort of insensitive person passes such a comment for those who are physically and mentally disabled during a deposition.
