Thanks to the support of the United States, Israel is able to commit genocide in Gaza, starve children, and attack sovereign countries without any repercussions. Even the U.S. allies are not safe from Israel’s trigger-happy approach, as Qatar recently found out. The progressive Congress members believe that was the final straw and that the U.S. needs to stop feeding Israel with weapons.
Qatar Gets Bombed as a Reward for Being a Peacemaker
Qatar played a significant role in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. It served as a mediator and worked to broker a ceasefire and agreement on the release of hostages between the two sides. As part of those efforts, the Gulf country hosted Hamas leadership at the request of the U.S. government. Their reward for being a peacemaker was bombs.
Israel launched an airstrike on Qatar’s capital, Doha, saying it was targeting Hamas leaders. The attack resulted in the death of six individuals, although Hamas said that all of its top officers survived. Many others were injured. The attack was condemned by several European countries, including France and Spain. Donald Trump said it “does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” but stopped short of criticizing it.
Israel Will Continue Spreading Conflict as Long as the U.S. Lets It
It’s obvious that Israel feels comfortable spreading conflict all across the entire Middle East. They know the U.S. has their back in case of any retaliation, and that has made them lose any sense of accountability. In the past two years, Israel not only attacked Palestine but also conducted attacks on Lebanon, Iran, Syria, and Yemen. This was all made possible by the generous supply of arms they received from America.
Rep. Summer Lee told The Intercept that Israel is “conducting a genocide and manufacturing a famine in Gaza using U.S. taxpayer dollars.” According to her, there “must be accountability for Israel’s unchecked power and destabilization of the region,” and the U.S. “must implement an arms embargo immediately.” Other progressive members of Congress share her opinion. Rep. Ro Khanna said that Israel’s actions are “escalating the conflict,” while Rep. Pramila Jayapal added that she believes Israel is not interested in ceasefire negotiations and wants to fight a “never-ending war.”
U.S. is Isolated in Continued Support of Israel
The United States is increasingly finding itself isolated in its continued support of Israel and has dug its heels in on the wrong side of history. They could also start losing their credibility among allies, especially Gulf countries. The likes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have the full right to question their deep ties with the U.S. and seek partnership with other countries to avoid being sold out like Qatar.
