U.N. Finds Israeli Genocide in Gaza, Leaving U.S. Politicians Split

2 Mins read

A report commissioned by the United Nations Human Rights Council has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Furthermore, the blistering report has also argued that many countries that are giving Israel weapons, such as the United States, are complicit in this genocide.

For many Palestine supporters, this finding has been a long time coming. For those who back the Israeli government, such as the U.S. government, this report is, to them, inaccurate. The U.S. State Department has already denounced the U.N., while many U.S. politicians have now found themselves split on the issue.

The ongoing Israeli war in Gaza has encompassed much of American politics for the past few years. With this finding — and the support and outrage that has come with it — it’s clear that the issue of Gaza is not going away anytime soon in the United States.

Republicans Denounce U.N. Report

For the most part, elected Republicans have stayed firmly on the side of the Israeli government and their Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. There have been exceptions, such as with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has already called the Gaza crisis a genocide.

However, many Republicans have come out to blast the United Nations for this report. Senator Ted Cruz has even gone so far as to threaten sanctions against those who conducted this U.N. finding.

Though the relationship between President Donald Trump and Netanyahu has at times seemed to be frayed, there is no indication that U.S. policy on Israel will change anytime soon, even if the right is becoming more divided on the issue.

Democrats Stay Mum on Genocide Findings

Many Democrats have also stuck by Israel throughout the war, though some tones have been shifting. It doesn’t matter that half of U.S. voters now believe that Israel is committing genocide. Both Republicans and many Democrats have seemingly refused to recognize this — or America’s complicity in these horrors.

Senator Bernie Sanders has finally stated that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, making him the first U.S. senator to do so. However, Sanders has faced much criticism from his supporters for many months now, as he had previously refused to use the word “genocide.”

Reading the U.N. report, it’s frustrating to see how both Republican and Democratic officials aren’t ashamed by their stance. An Israeli military database has suggested that 83% of the 65,000 Palestinians killed were civilians. Israeli politicians have called Palestinians “human animals,” and Netanyahu has claimed that Gaza City will soon be Israel’s.

What more needs to be done for American politicians to wake up and see the atrocities before them?
