Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have stepped up their efforts in the last weeks of the 2024 presidential contest. As Election Day approaches on November 5, Harris’ criticism of Trump over his purported affinity for Adolf Hitler has intensified the race. Her comments came after reports from retired General John Kelly, Trump’s former White House chief of staff, who offered alarming details about Trump’s tenure in office.
Kelly’s Comments Spark Controversy
John Kelly’s statements, which emerged in interviews with The New York Times, have stirred significant controversy. Kelly described Trump as a fascist, alleging that, during his presidency, Trump questioned why his military leaders could not behave more like Hitler’s. Kelly further warned that, if reelected, Trump would govern like a dictator without proper constraints. He recounted that Trump had once told him, “Well, but Hitler did some good things.” These remarks painted a disturbing picture of Trump’s leadership style and set off a strong response from the Democratic ticket.
Harris Responds to Kelly’s Allegations
Vice President Harris addressed Kelly’s revelations in a speech at her residence in Washington, D.C., labeling Trump’s reported comments as “deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous.” She argued that invoking Hitler, who was responsible for the deaths of six million Jews and countless American soldiers, was a clear sign of Trump’s dangerous tendencies.
“Donald Trump said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler because he does not want a military loyal to the U.S. Constitution, but rather to himself,” Harris said. She warned that a second term for Trump would see the removal of those who had previously acted as guardrails against his “unhinged and unstable” behavior. With the election less than two weeks away, and early voting already underway, she urged Americans to recognize the risks of a Trump presidency. “We know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power. The question in 13 days will be, what do the American people want?” she added.
Trump Campaign Pushes Back
The Trump campaign swiftly dismissed Harris’ criticisms and Kelly’s allegations. Spokesman Steven Cheung called Harris a “stone-cold loser” who was becoming “increasingly desperate” due to what he described as a flailing campaign. He accused her of spreading “outright lies and falsehoods” and claimed that her rhetoric was contributing to threats against Trump. “Kamala Harris is stoking the flames of violence all in the name of politics. She is despicable and her grotesque behavior proves she is wholly unfit for office,” Cheung stated.
Trump continued his campaigning in battleground states despite the issue. Trump attended a town hall in Georgia where he stressed the importance of the election as his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, rallied supporters in Las Vegas, Nevada. “In my opinion, this election is the most significant in our nation’s history. I assume the majority of folks here share my strong belief. “It is a big one, but we do not say that lightly,” he told the audience.
High Stakes as Election Nears
As both sides get ready for the November election, the contest between Trump and Harris has become more combative. The accusations made by Kelly have intensified an already fierce debate and cast doubt on Trump’s character and leadership style. Harris, meanwhile, emphasizes the high stakes of the election by continuing to speak out about the threats she sees in Trump. Both campaigns concentrate on securing key battleground states as early voting begins and millions of ballots have already been cast. Harris is scheduled to speak at a CNN town hall in Pennsylvania to bolster her campaign.
