With the help of Donald Trump’s endorsement, Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine successfully fend off Democrat challengers in special elections in two Florida congressional districts to keep Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Still, their wins came in a narrower fashion than expected. Instead of celebrating, Republicans should worry about the declining support in Florida and how it could impact the 2026 midterm elections.
Republicans Get a Reality Check
Patronis edged Democrat challenger Gay Valimont by 15 points in Florida’s 1st congressional district. This represented a significant dip compared to November’s special election in which Matt Gaetz, who since took over as Trump’s Attorney General, defeated Valimont by 32 points. Meanwhile, Fine’s margin of victory over Democrat Josh Weil in the 6th congressional district was 14 points compared to the 33-point win margin that Mike Waltz, now National Security Advisor, had in November.
Florida has been Republican stronghold for decades. However, the results and low turnout in special elections are a reality check and indicator that Florida voters are dissatisfied with the current course of Trump’s administration.
Democrats’ Big Spending Fails to Cause an Upset
Democrats poured in a lot of resources in these special elections. Valimont raised $6.7 million compared to Patronis’ $2.5 million while Weil’s campaign received $10 million compared to Fine’s $1 million. While they managed to cause waves with their big spending, it ultimately failed to cause an upset. It was always an uphill battle that no amount of money could have changed. Democrat candidates failed to combine their funds with a platform that could resonate with Florida voters in order to give themselves a more realistic chance.
Still, Democrats believe it was money well spent. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried called it a “down payment on our future” and “a historic overperformance for Democrats.” She added that this was also a sign that voters are “already rejecting Trump’s extreme agenda.”
Success That Causes Concern
Despite less-than-desired results, the Republicans will consider the Florida special elections a success. However, there is no denying that this success should also make them concerned. Democrats are showing intention to outspend them and challenge them on every step. If Democrats keep up this energy and Republicans fail to address their shortcomings, the 2026 midterm elections could be much closer than anyone predicts.
