Elon Musk’s Latest Role as a Buyer of Justice

2 Mins read

Controversy seems to have become second nature for the notorious Elon Musk. Whether it is his unapologetic social media presence, his blatant denial of the Nazi salute, his business dealings and, of recently his political affiliations, Musk always seems to be in the limelight.

As if he did not already have enough on his plate with SpaceX, Tesla, assisting Donald Trump and his large family of 14 kids, Elon Musk has now made it his life’s mission to tilt the Wisconsin court elections in favor of the right. Musk’s recent “donation” ( $18mn) towards Brad Schimel’s campaign for the Wisconsin Supreme court  has gathered a lot of public attention and is a bold acceptance of his stance in this election.

The Wisconsin Court’s Case

Let’s step back and focus on what is happening in the Wisconsin court case surrounding Tesla. This leading electric car brand has been fighting a case in the Wisconsin high court challenging their restrictive laws surrounding car dealerships. The trickle-down effect of these would be on labor laws and business regulations. This translates to the blockage of Tesla sales via its own dealership in Wisconsin.

What is Elon Musk’s Real Motive Here?

Elon Musk is no philanthropist, as already reflected by all his personal or business decisions. Almost every decision undertaken by him have been centered around increasing profitably for one or all of his business ventures.

In addition to “supporting” the conservative candidate he has offered to give $ 1 million to two “lucky” voters to increase the voter turnout for the Wisconsin supreme court election.

Elon Musk is a “money man” and he is known to bend rules when it comes to maximizing profits for his businesses. Since Wisconsin didn’t allow Tesla to open its own dealership (lesser money for Musk) he decided to change the dynamics of the game by “supporting” the conservative candidate in the court elections.

Why is This Deeply Concerning?

While it is not uncommon for corporations to operate between the lines at times to save costs, bribing a court candidate publicly reflects total impunity  on part of Elon Musk.

This is deeply concerning for the public since if anyone with “enough” money can sway the justice system in their favor is it truly a “justice” system anymore. The increasingly blurring of boundaries between the corporations and the legal system is alarming especially with respect to the well-being of consumers.
