The alliance between Elon Musk and Donald Trump has come to an end. However, the political implications of this fallout could be much bigger than either of them expected. After the president threatened to strip the tech mogul of federal contracts and subsidies, Musk fired back by calling out Trump’s alleged ties to the Epstein scandal. He even threatened to decommission the Dragon spacecraft.
Could the world’s richest man, who was once aligned with Trump, become an accidental asset for the center-left?
MAGA Turns on Musk, But the Center Might Be Listening
As you would expect, Trump’s camp went straight at Musk for his comments. Steve Bannon wants him deported, and right-wing influencers called him a deep state stooge. Trump threatened his businesses without considering the implications for America’s technological future.
While MAGA headliners continue their assault on Musk, something interesting is happening: centrists and even some Democrats are seeing Musk in a new light. His refusal to back down to the GOP is quite outstanding and inspiring for many.
On X, Trump floated the idea of creating a centrist party that would represent the 80% in the middle. This was after he had slammed Trump’s $2.3 trillion spending bill on multiple occasions, labeling it a recession bait.
Musk isn’t becoming a Democrat, but his ideals are somewhat aligned with the Democrats. This split means the new enemy of MAGA is no longer necessarily a Democrat’s foe.
$150 Billion Lost, but a New Political Playbook Gained?
As the two billionaires went back and forth, exchanging words, Tesla stock plunged 14% in a single day. That’s about $150 billion in market value. Elon Musk personally lost $20 billion as a result.
Wall Street blamed this on Trump, who threatened to cut SpaceX and Tesla’s government ties. You would think that Musk would ease up on the gas, but instead, he came out guns blazing.
Not only did he float the idea of a third party, but he also re-shared several posts blasting Trump’s tariffs. Musk’s open rebellion signals the end of the honeymoon between Republicans and Silicon Valley.
The GOP just alienated one of the most visionary Americans alive, and it could come back to hurt them in the 2028 elections.
