Is Donald Trump still upset about the 2019 NATO summit?

1 Mins read

Was Trudeau’s joke worth triggering this political grudge? Trump’s Christmas message was a lot more sarcastic than festive!

What was the Christmas message by Trump?

The Christmas message from incoming President Donald Trump referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was dripping with sarcasm. He said, “Merry Christmas to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada. If Canada were to become our 51st state, their taxes would be cut more than 60%, their business would immediately double in size, and they would be military protected like no other country anywhere in the world.”

This might seem witty on social media, but it isn’t very respectful. Why would the incoming president of the United States propose making Canada the 51st state?

The fact worth noting here is that Canada and the U.S. share the largest trading partnership in the world, which annually amounts to $923 billion. Since Trump’s tenure, this relationship has weakened, and disputes over tariffs, trade agreements, and personal spats are to blame.

What explains Trump’s deep dislike for Trudeau?

Back at the NATO summit in 2019, Trudeau was overheard joking about Trump’s extended press conference. Analysts note that the fallout was immediate—Trump’s reaction was severe, calling Trudeau “two-faced” and leaving the summit early.

Name-calling political opponents is one of Trump’s tactics. Referring to Trudeau as ‘Governor’ connects the dots to previous controversies, like when Trump referred to Kamala Harris as “President Harris” during the 2024 election campaigns.

Is Trudeau going to be one of Trump’s favourite names for raising controversies?

By reducing Trudeau’s status to governor, Trump subtly positions Canada under U.S. dominance. According to a report released by the Public Trust in Government: 1958-2024 | Pew Research Center trust in the U.S. among Canadians fell by 20% during Trump’s presidency.

Trudeau ignores direct response?

Trudeau is prioritizing his political image as elections are looming in Canada. He has avoided directly responding to Trump’s insult, and Trump supporters are calling him weak.

If Trudeau was “two-faced” in 2019 and “Governor Trudeau” in 2024, the world will be watching to see what Trump’s next insult will be. More importantly, will Trudeau’s silence on public roasting help him politically, or will he remain an easy target for Trump?
