Why Criminalizing Abortion Could Cost the GOP Everything

1 Mins read

Since Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in 2022, we have seen Republicans push several abortion bans and criminal laws. They have even charged doctors and people who assist with abortions with felonies. In the midst of all of these, 63% of Americans still support abortion in most or all cases. So, why is the GOP still pushing for this move even when it looks like they are losing control of the people’s goodwill?

Swing Voters Are Fleeing the Overreach

One thing that everyone has noticed is that the recent elections have shown a generational shift is taking place. People are no longer stuck to a party like before, but to ideals. This is why the abortion bans have become big issues that the Republicans have to face. As a matter of fact, they have lost the support of key voters and are doing all they can to find middle a ground.

When a poll was conducted in 2024, 12% of voters said they considered abortion to be their most important concern. 52.2% of the group said it was very important, but not the most important. This number is large enough to change the outcome of close races.

In another poll, 53% Republican women said they want a federal guarantee of abortion rights. They also said they don’t want providers to be punished in any way. This further proves that this view is not restricted to the left.

For now, the main base is still cheering all the tough talk. But we know that there is serious backlash in the suburbs, swing counties, and among independents.

From Pro-Life Victory to Political Suicide Pact

Punishing abortion is a big GOP win. However, it doesn’t make sense to continue as it’s costing the party control. The plan is already backfiring.

There have been more than 400 trials for pregnancy-related crimes since Roe was overturned. It would break your heart to learn that most of them were against poor women who lived in red states.

These cases are making people very angry and it could spell doom for the GOP. If they refuse to listen to people, losing the midterms might be the least of their worries.
