Since the conservative-led Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which allowed the legalization of abortion access to American women, states have gone out of their way to restrict or outright ban abortions. While red states have pushed for draconian laws that target women, blue states have become safe havens. Many Republicans have long pushed for abortion bans. Now that we’ve lived a few years with these bans, one thing is clear: more women are having more abortions.

Abortions Increase Nationwide After Bans and Restrictions
Despite Republican politicians clearly thinking that abortions will lessen if they ban or restrict them, abortions have increased nationwide since various state bans have gone into effect. As so many activists have long said, abortions will continue, even if politicians seek to deny women the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
The Society of Family Planning has recently revealed that the monthly average of abortions rose from 2022’s 79,600 to 2025’s 98,800. This rise in abortions around the country seems linked to the rise in telehealth abortion services, which were first allowed by the FDA in 2021.
Telehealth has seen a major increase in the United States in the past few years. For abortion services, women have relied on telehealth — especially if they live in states with bans or restrictions. Abortions done through telehealth have also increased over the years. In the first quarter of 2022, only 5% of abortions were done using telehealth. By the first half of 2025, this rose to 27%.

Why Women Are Having More Abortions
Though abortion has been restricted or banned in many conservative-led states, women have been able to find abortion access by using telehealth under shield laws. The use of women using telehealth for abortion services has jumped by 61% in one year in these restrictive states, much to the consternation of conservatives. As a result, in some states, Republicans are attacking these shield laws—and don’t appear to be losing steam.
Many Republicans may not want to discuss the fact that their actions are driving up abortions. There are various reasons why more American women are having abortions throughout the country. Reduced access to contraception, particularly in these red states with abortion bans and restrictions, has become a major problem.
However, many women — women who are already mothers or who want families — have chosen to have abortions in recent years because of these bans. States with restrictive laws in place have made it incredibly dangerous to carry a child to term. News reports have continued to flood the nation about women almost dying after miscarriages, all because the strict laws in place view certain medical procedures as abortions, rather than as the life-saving services they are.
As a result of all of this Republican interference in women’s lives, abortions have risen — and likely will continue to.
