Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Kim Kardashian are officially divorced. As per PEOPLE, the pair will have joint custody of their four children physically and legally, with West paying $200,000 a month in child support. He is responsible for half their educational, security, and medical costs.
Any disputes over the former couple’s children will be settled through mediation. If either fails to participate in this process, the other can make the decision by default. The rapper and the reality star divided their assets based on their prenup, and each has waived spousal support.
The conclusion of the divorce comes nine months after a court declared Kardashian legally single. She and Ye began dating in 2012 and married in May 2014. In 2020, their marriage was in crisis when Ye announced a controversial bid for the United States presidency. While campaigning, he shared incredibly personal details about his marriage and family on Twitter.
Kim tried to stand by her husband as he divulged this sensitive information to the world and pled for the public’s compassion. She made a rare reference to Ye’s bipolar disorder and admitted the pair were enduring a “complicated and painful” situation.
After almost seven years of marriage, the SKIMS founded filed for divorce in February 2021. In the court documents, Kardashian made her wishes and reasons very clear.
“I very much desire to be divorced. I have asked Kanye to keep our divorce private, but he has not done so. Kanye has been putting a lot of misinformation regarding our private family matter and co-parenting on social media, which has created emotional distress.”
Disclosing private family information is just one of Ye’s questionable uses of social media. In September, he unleased a brutal barrage of tweets aimed at Kris Jenner after admitting he and Kim were debating where their children should attend school. He called Hollywood a “giant brothel” and criticized Jenner for supporting Kim posing in Playboy.
After a series of antisemitic posts in October, Ye had several of his social media accounts suspended. In response, he purchased the conservative-leaning social media platform, Parler. While the rapper is trying to make a case for free speech, his disturbing posts cost him a lucrative partnership with Adidas, the makers of his wildly popular Yeezy products.
The athletic giant has also launched investigations into Ye for intimidating Yeezy staff members. Some incidents even include randomly displaying pornographic material, such as explicit photos and videos of his now ex-wife. In the wake of this divorce, Ye has lost much more than his marriage.
