If the Netflix miniseries about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t ruffle feathers enough, the Duke of Sussex’s upcoming memoir very well could. In a leaked extract from the aptly titled book, Spare, Guardian reports Prince Harry detailing an argument with his older brother that led to a physical altercation.
The incident took place at Harry’s home in 2019. William had confronted his younger sibling over his “rolling catastrophe” of a relationship with American actress Meghan Markle. On the day of the conflict, William arrived at Nottingham Cottage “piping hot.” He did not hold back in criticizing his sister-in-law, whom he reportedly called “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”
Harry reacted by telling William he was “parroting the press narrative” about his new wife. He proceeded to accuse his brother of “acting like an heir,” which led to an exchange of insults. William then claimed he was simply trying to help. Harry’s response was: “Help me? Sorry-is that what you call this?”
Not soon after, things got physical between the two brothers. The younger prince claims William “came at” him, and everything happened “so very fast.” Harry’s details of the event reveal some rather undignified behavior.
“He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Harry claims William urged him to fight back. When he refused, William left and returned later “looking regretful” and apologized for what happened. As he was leaving, Harry claims his brother looked back and said, “You don’t need to tell Meg about this.” To this, Harry replied, “You mean that you attacked me.” William countered with, “I didn’t attack you, Harold.”
Ultimately, Meghan Markle did learn of the incident. When she noticed the scrapes and bruises on her husband’s back and asked what had happened, Harry told her. Per the memoir, “She wasn’t that surprised and wasn’t all that angry. She was terribly sad.”
Spare is due to be published on January 10, and many people are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an explosive read.
