NFL’s Harrison Butker Stirs Debate by Endorsing Women as Homemakers

Butker’s remarks stir debate on gender roles.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has ignited a heated online debate by addressing a class of college graduates in his speech on May 11, that one of the “most important” titles a woman can hold is that of homemaker. His comments were made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts institution in Atchison, Kansas. Butker’s speech also criticized abortion, Pride Month, and COVID-19 lockdown measures, but it was his views on women’s roles that garnered the most backlash.

Addressing female graduates directly

In his speech, Butker specifically addressed the female graduates, suggesting that they have been deceived by “the most diabolical lies.” He questioned their career ambitions, implying that many would find greater fulfillment in marriage and motherhood. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,” Butker said. “But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Butker also stated that his wife’s life began in earnest when she embraced her role as a wife and mother, a position he credited with enabling his professional success. His remarks echo the sentiments of communities that advocate for traditional gender roles, often referred to as the “tradwife” movement.

Backlash and criticism

The reaction to Butker’s speech was swift and critical. Former NFL sideline reporter Lisa Guerrero tweeted, “Hey @NFL— If you want to continue to grow your female fan base and any other marginalized group, come get your boy.” Filmmaker Michael McWhorter, known on TikTok as TizzyEnt, argued that Butker’s comments seemed to shame women who do not wish to be homemakers. “The point is, he seemed to be acting as if you should be ashamed if you don’t want to be a homemaker,” McWhorter said.

The NFL clarified that Butker’s speech represented his personal views and not those of the organization. “The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” a spokesperson stated.

Calls for Action and Broader Implications

In the days following his speech, a petition calling for the Chiefs to dismiss Butker for his “discriminatory remarks” garnered nearly 19,000 signatures. The petition argued that his comments reinforce harmful stereotypes and create a toxic environment counterproductive to social progress.

Notable public figures, including actor Bradley Whitford and DJ Flavor Flav, also voiced their disapproval. The incident highlights the ongoing cultural battle over traditional gender roles and the place of such views in public discourse.

Culture War

Chiefs’ Harrison Butker’s speech has become a flashpoint in the culture wars, especially concerning the role of women as homemakers. While some defend his views as a personal belief system, others see his remarks as damaging and regressive. As the conversation continues, the impact on Butker’s career and public image remains to be seen. This incident underscores the tension between traditional values and evolving social norms in contemporary society.
