All you wanted was a quick peek at that exciting story that popped up on your Instagram feed. And before you know it, you have spent close to an hour scrolling through hundreds of reels on your phone. Sounds familiar? Well, Instagram users will soon have the option to set up a ‘Take a Break’ feature on the app, helping them curb their addiction to the platform.
Announcing the testing of the brand-new feature that will help users set alarms to go off after 10, 20, and 30-minute durations, Adam Mosseri, the Instagram head, said the popular social media platform intended to give users more control.
Testing for the new feature is set to begin over the next few days, and once the testing phase is over, the ‘Take a Break’ feature will be available to all users. GSM Arena predicts that the new feature will go live as early as December.
With more than a billion monthly users and 500 million daily users for its Stories feature alone, Instagram is highly popular. This also means that many users are addicted to the platform, scrolling through Instagram Reels for hours on end.
“We started testing a new feature called Take a Break this week. This opt-in control enables you to receive break reminders in-app after a duration of your choosing.” read Mosseri’s announcement on Twitter. “I’m excited to dig into the results and hopefully launch this sometime in December.”
“Ultimately, you know what is best for you when it comes to how you use the app. And we want to make sure we provide tools for you to shape Instagram into what works for you,” he continued in the accompanying video.
Popular with individual content creators and businesses, Instagram offers several features to users, making it easy for anyone to spend hours on the app. Considering the ill effects of spending too much time on your phone, the ‘Take a Break’ feature is undoubtedly a great user-friendly idea to curb addiction.
