The new Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is pushing to ban psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety pills, Adderall, and other medications. Instead, he wants to send mental health patients to “wellness farms.” It’s like summer camp, but for depression and without the fun.
RFK Jr. backtracked on his stance on Roe v. Wade and big pharma. He now supports state-by-state abortion bans and stated during a Senate hearing that he won’t tackle big pharma to reduce drug costs.
But this roided-out anti-vaxxer wasn’t always like this. During a 2024 virtual summit, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. proposed solid solutions for the opioid crisis, including treating addiction as an illness rather than a crime, legalizing marijuana, and replacing rural prisons with “wellness farms.”
Wellness farms are not a new concept. The USA first dabbled in the wellness farm business in the 1930s. It was a bad idea then, and it’s still a bad idea today.
History Reveals A Critical Flaw in Wellness Farms
The first experiment with wellness farms was Narco, Lexington in 1935. It housed more than 1500 patients, and by all reports, it wasn’t a “big success.” As part of the rehabilitation, patients engaged in music and dance performances, “therapeutic labor,” and inhumane drug testing.
Despite Norco and administration promises, it simply didn’t work. 90% of patients relapsed within one day of leaving the controlled environment of the farm. Studies concluded that talk therapy, AA meetings, listening to music, and slaving away on a farm were not enough to cure drug addiction.
RFK Jr. Won’t Make America Healthy Again
Despite promising that he will not touch the children’s vaccination programs, RFK Jr. indicated in a press release that “nothing will be off-limits” from examination and reviews. This is happening at a time when vaccine-preventable diseases like measles are ravaging families across Texas. Experts worry that Kennedy’s approach could lead to decreased vaccination rates and a resurgence of infectious diseases.
Robert F. Kennedy also launched a “Make America Healthy Again” public health campaign that plans to address chronic diseases linked to poor nutrition and environmental factors. No doubt this is important, but Kennedy’s focus is on rollbacking regulatory protections against unproven treatments and harmful substances. For instance, his anti-science rhetoric on fluoride in drinking water can turn back years of progress made in preventing dental decay.
Democrats argue that Robert F. Kennedy Jr poses significant risks to the American health system. His dangerous views on vaccines, political interference in public health policy, and changes to healthcare reimbursement could lead to a deterioration of public health standards, increased disease outbreaks, and greater inequities in healthcare access.
