Déjà Vu? China Faces Another Virus; Is Keeping Suspiciously Quiet

2 Mins read

Hospitals across China are overflowing with patients, but China remains silent. Is the world about to witness the pandemic again? What is this mysterious pneumonia-like illness? Should we worry or be ready for the next world lockdown?

Videos of crowded hallways and frantic healthcare workers are spreading over the internet. This case is going viral with an alarming picture. Beijing has identified the outbreak as being linked to the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus known for decades but previously under the radar.

This outbreak is different yet dangerous. The illness targets young adults and children, and the cases are rising rapidly. The strain on the healthcare system is reminiscent of early 2020, leaving many asking: Is this simply another seasonal virus surge, or is something more concerning?

Do we have any similar traces from the past?

Memories of the Wuhan outbreak and its pictures of the global pandemic are still fresh. Remembering that, the similarities in the new virus variant are unsettling: the broad term that China has revealed for the illness is – “pneumonia of unknown origin” and the rising number of cases seems to indicate that the data is strategically kept limited.

However, the Chinese government promises to be consistent with the world with transparency and updates related to the disease. Officials have also mentioned that the situation is under control. But the global trust in Beijing’s crisis management has been tarnished by past events. Could the government’s reassurance be masking deeper problems?

How much trust can we place on China’s claims of transparency, given the past patterns of secrecy?

The statements of openness from China are not completely open. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised some serious concerns about the limited dataset on case numbers and the virus spread and duration.

Why is there a delay in sharing critical details with the international community? The disconnect between Beijing’s narrative and the chaos in hospital footage raises questions about China’s words.

What will the world have to suffer if this HMPV situation goes out of control?

If the situations shown according to the viral footage on the internet are true and China continues its update delay, the world will spiral out of control. China denies any shortcomings in the situation. However, experts and WHO officials warn that this new variant lacks effective vaccines and targeted treatments. The statements subtly hint towards world preparedness with the question: Did we learn enough from the COVID-19 pandemic, or are we doomed to repeat our mistakes? What do you think?
