Disney’s Snow White is getting ripped apart online, with people calling it a disaster, a “woke” mess, and one of the worst remakes ever. But much of the hate toward this movie just feels exaggerated and bandwagon-driven.
It’s ironic that the 1937 Snow White faced years of criticism–until the 2025 version came along. While the original may be a beautiful relic of its time, it promoted outdated ideals, portraying a passive heroine whose only purpose was to find love and be rescued by a prince. The modern version, despite its major flaws, at least tries to introduce more empowering themes for young girls.
Where Does Snow White Fail?
Snow White does have problems with its weak writing, performances, and casting decisions. The dialogues felt very awkward, and not to mention, Gal Gadot’s performance as the Evil Queen was ludicrous. Her expressions were too robotic, and even her dialogue delivery felt too mechanical.
Moreover, the Seven Dwarfs controversy about replacing them with a diverse group of “magical creatures” felt like Disney was trying too hard to be politically correct when it could have used actors who have dwarfism to educate viewers.
The pacing is also uneven, which makes it hard to stay engaged.
Why Snow White Isn’t That Bad?
That said, Snow White does not actually deserve this much hate. While the movie isn’t groundbreaking, it can be a one-time watch. Some of the visual effects are stunning. The dwarves (despite the CGI nightmare) were one of the most entertaining parts of the movie. You’ll cringe at their designs, but you might tap your foot.
The feminist twist, which made Snow White independent instead of waiting for a prince, isn’t a bad idea either. Moreover, the claim that the movie pushes a communist agenda is an unusual criticism. It reimagines the “fairest of them all” as a message about fairness in a social sense and collective power rather than individual success. Whereas the older version simply relied on fairness as beauty, which again set the wrong standard for young girls.
Why The Hate Feels Exaggerated?
A big reason Snow White is getting dragged so hard is because of the culture war surrounding it. The internet loves a good controversy, and topics like feminism, diversity, and “wokeness” fuel heated debates. The ‘wokeness’ and feminism aren’t bad themes in the movie. Admittedly, the 1937 Snow White was a poor role model for modern young women.
Moreover, the Snow White PR tours repeatedly reminded audiences that it was a remake of the 1937 classic with a modern twist. So, constantly comparing its themes to the original doesn’t make sense since it was never meant to be a direct copy.
