How Rising Filmmaker Asia Bonetto Is Making a Name for Herself

2 Mins read

In the enchanting landscapes of a small town in Northern Italy, a burgeoning cinematic force, Asia Bonetto, emerged with a passion for storytelling that transcends borders. Raised in a multicultural family, Asia’s childhood was steeped in a love for languages and a profound connection to nature—a combination that laid the foundation for her extraordinary journey into the world of independent filmmaking.

At sixteen, Asia ventured from her Italian roots to pursue a Film Production education in the United States. Santa Monica College became her creative haven, providing not only an education but also a community of inspiring peers. Graduating in 2020 with three Associate Degrees and later completing her Bachelors Degree in Film and Television Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Asia’s academic journey marked the beginning of her rising star.

Asia’s distinctive voice and dedication to storytelling have garnered her widespread acclaim. Recognitions such as being a Semi-Finalist at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival 2023 and receiving an Honorable Mention at DWFLA 2023 for her film “How it Goes” underscore her rising influence. Notably, “Broken Layers,” her film that secured Best Student Film at the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and Best Live Action Short Film at the London Shorts Film Festival, catapulted her into the spotlight.

What sets Asia apart is her steadfast focus on social justice and women’s empowerment. Strong female leads dominate her films, reflecting Asia’s commitment to addressing cultural, social, and political debates. “Slim Chances,” in particular, stands out as a poignant exploration of eating disorders, earning Asia acclaim at both the Women in Film 2022 and the California Women’s Film Festival 2023. Spanning from the impactful “The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan” to the thought-provoking “The War Within,” Asia fearlessly confronts societal challenges, advocating for reform and fostering understanding.

Pursuing her commitment to creating a meaningful influence, Asia has recently embraced a position at The Labelle Foundation, a distinguished dog rescue organization in Los Angeles. Renowned for its substantial contributions, this non-profit saves more than a hundred dogs each month. Asia’s engagement in this cause harmonizes perfectly with her overarching goal of fostering positive change in both the world and society.

In a world hungry for meaningful narratives, Asia Bonetto has not only earned recognition but is also forging a unique niche in the realm of filmmaking. Her body of work stands as a testament to her belief that film can indeed make a difference in the world. With each project, Asia amplifies the voices of the unheard, challenges societal norms, and leaves an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. As she emphatically states, “I strongly think that film can make a difference in the world,” and Asia Bonetto’s compelling journey serves as living proof of this conviction.
