Hollywood Producer on Sydney Sweeney: “Not Pretty, Can’t Act”

1 Mins read

Top Hollywood producer Carol Baum, known for her work on films such as “Father of the Bride” and “Shining Through,” has criticized actress Sydney Sweeney following the release of her latest film “Anyone But You.”

Baum expressed her opinion during a screening of her 1988 film “Dead Ringers” at the Jacob Burns Center in Pleasantville, New York.

Baum’s Scathing Review

Baum reportedly said that Sweeney, a two-time Emmy-nominated actress, “can’t act” and questioned the actress’s recent rise to fame. The producer referred to Sweeney’s recent rom-com “Anyone But You,” in which she stars opposite Glen Powell, as “unwatchable.”

“I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her,” Baum reportedly told the audience. “She’s not pretty, she can’t act. I don’t get Sydney Sweeney.”

Baum revealed that she had discussed Sweeney with her students at The University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. She said that none of the students could explain Sweeney’s popularity, as she found the actress neither attractive nor talented.

Event Moderator Agrees

Event moderator Janet Maslin confirmed Baum’s scathing review of “Anyone But You” and described the film as “unwatchable” herself. Maslin also praised Baum’s film “Dead Ringers,” saying it improves over time.

Despite her critique, Baum surprisingly admitted that she would be open to taking on a project if Sweeney starred in it. She emphasized the importance of getting a movie made, saying, “Who walks away from a green light? Nobody I know.”

Sweeney’s Rise to Fame

Sweeney solidified her place in Hollywood following her success in HBO’s “Euphoria,” where she played Cassie Howard, a role that earned her an Emmy nomination in 2022.

She also received an Emmy nomination for her role as Olivia Mossbacher in the first season of “The White Lotus.”

The actress’s success in these high-profile projects continues to make her a sought-after talent in the industry, despite Baum’s critical comments on her recent performance in “Anyone But You.”
