Like any other Disney movie, Snow White was much anticipated by the fans of this classic fairytale. It was set to release in March of 2024 but was delayed by over a year. The new trailer was dropped one month ago, and the fan’s reaction wasn’t what Disney was expecting.
According to CBR, the trailer has received more than 1.4 million dislikes and 100,000 likes. It makes it one of the most disliked videos on YouTube. Disney was also brave in leaving the comment section open. It allowed viewers to express their dislike in some hilarious ways.
One comment read, ‘Disney – “Coming to a theatre near you.” Me – Is that a threat?’ Other comments were not so savory. Viewers compared Rachel Zegler’s appearance to Lord Farquaad, the antagonist from the movie Shrek. Another viewer wished for the “evil queen to win this time.”
Hate Over Disney’s Push for Unnecessary ‘Wokeness’
One big reason for people’s hate towards Snow White is the casting of Rachel Zegler, a person of color, as the main lead. Snow White is described as having ‘skin as white as snow,’ with her fairness referring to her pale skin and red lips. Viewers see this as a blatant attempt to add “wokeness” when unnecessary. TikTok user Reuben Woodall, criticized Disney’s attempt to turn Snow White into a “girl boss,” garnering 1.3 million views. David Hand, the son of the director of the original 1937 movie, said that he felt it was a “disgrace” that Disney was making a “woke, pathetic remake.”
In a leaked video of Disney’s meeting from 2022, executives talked about pushing for more LGBTQ content because Gen Z is “queerer” than others. In the video, Karey Burke, President of Disney’s General Entertainment, said that she wants 50% of all Disney characters to be either from LGBTQ+ or minority groups.
It’s also important to add here that some of the dislike is also due to an elaborate hate campaign against Rachel Ziegler.
‘Dwarfs’ Are Offensive, ‘Magical Creatures’ Preferred
One viewer commented that the CGI-made Dwarfs or “Magical Creatures” were scary and would “haunt him in his dream.” Disney is being criticized for horrible animations of the dwarfs. Originally, Disney planned to use actual dwarf actors but changed their minds after receiving criticism from Peter Dinklage.
Peter Dinklage, Games of Thrones star, criticized Disney for being progressive in one way and backward in the other. In reply to Peter Dinklage, Disney decided to use CGI and substitute the word Dwarfs or Magical Creatures. As critics pointed out, this change wouldn’t have made a difference if the CGI was not so “hard to look at.”
