Recognized for her legendary performance as Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s prequels to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Cate Blanchett has revealed an unexpected aspect of her income from the saga. When the actress made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Wednesday, August 7, she was questioned about her “biggest paycheck” from a movie part. Even Andy Cohen, the host, was surprised by her response.
Blanchett clarified, “No, no one got paid anything to do that movie,” highlighting the fact that none of the actors were significantly compensated for their work in the movies. “No, that was way before any of that… no, nothing,” Blanchett explained in response to Cohen’s question about if she got a “piece of the back-end.” “I wanted to work with the guy who made Braindead,” she said, alluding to Jackson’s 1992 horror/comedy movie, as her reason for taking on the project.
“I mean, I basically got free sandwiches and I got to keep my ears,” said Blanchett. The actress gained notoriety for playing the elven figure Galadriel while sporting pointed prosthetic ears. “No, no one got paid anything,” she repeated.
Blanchett played coy when asked about her largest payday to date, responding, “Well, not very often.” Women are not paid as much as you may believe.
Blanchett’s Unique Fashion Statement at Borderlands Premiere
In the Borderlands movie, Blanchett plays the well-known outlaw Lilith. This is her most recent performance. At the Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday, August 6, the actress made waves with an ensemble composed of 102 spoons in all.
Before hitting the red carpet, Blanchett was spotted flaunting her outfit in a video posted to Instagram by her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart. The caption read, “She found the ring and it is @louisvuitton #CateBlanchett heading to @borderlandsfilm premiere wearing—believe it or not—a top made of 102 spoons from @hoda_kova.” The clothing line Hodakova, a sustainable European fashion label, is well-known for producing “artisanal pieces” out of repurposed and deadstock materials.
A New Chapter in Borderlands
Stewart also shared a picture of Blanchett on the red carpet wearing a distinctive Hodakova ensemble on Wednesday, jokingly captioned it, “A whole new meaning for Spooning!”
In the film Borderlands, Blanchett’s character Lilith leads a motley crew of pals that go back to Pandora, her home planet, after accepting a job to locate the daughter of Atlas, a weapons manufacturer played by Édgar Ramírez, who has gone missing. In addition, Jack Black, Gina Gershon, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Hart are featured in the movie.
