Here’s Why Alec Baldwin Is Facing Charges of Involuntary Manslaughter Again

2 Mins read

In a significant turn of events, Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust” in 2021. This marks the second time Baldwin faces such charges, with the initial charges filed on January 31, 2023, and later dropped in April 2023.

Baldwin’s legal team, comprised of lawyers Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas, expressed readiness for the legal battle, stating, “We look forward to our day in court” following the release of the new charge.

The catalyst for the renewed charges may be attributed to a video released in November from the “Rust” set, where Baldwin directed crew members to move away before he prepared to fire the weapon. Celebrity attorney Christopher C. Melcher suggested that the footage, while showing Baldwin’s adherence to gun safety rules, also indicated a lack of due regard for safety when the fatal shot was fired.

Hutchins lost her life, and director Joel Souza was wounded during the incident on October 21, 2021. Baldwin, who has consistently denied pulling the trigger, now faces a more robust legal challenge with the refiled charges.

Legal experts weighed in on the case, with Kate Mangels, partner at Kinsella Holley Iser Kump, suggesting that the prosecution might have a stronger case this time due to new testing on the weapon, which Baldwin vehemently denies firing. The attorneys can argue that the tests on a reconstructed gun with new parts may not be conclusive evidence of what transpired with the original firearm.

Rither Alabre, a former New York prosecutor, highlighted that when the initial charges were dismissed, prosecutors reserved the right to refile, indicating they now believe they have the necessary evidence, including forensic analysis on the gun.

Brand expert Eric Schiffer noted the evolving public perception of Baldwin, acknowledging that while initially unsympathetic, Baldwin seemed to be gaining back some trust over time. However, Schiffer also pointed out that the recent charges might further impact public sentiment, stating, “Most will see this as another celebrity trying to not take accountability for their actions.”

Despite the legal turmoil, Baldwin still faces civil lawsuits, including one brought by “Rust” script supervisor Mamie Mitchell and another by Hutchins’ family. The ongoing legal saga raises questions about Baldwin’s future in the industry, with Schiffer acknowledging that while Baldwin has paid some price, “There is a segment that is rooting that he gets through this, and there is a segment that says guns don’t go off, celebrity elites should not get favouritism, and he should face justice and let the jury decide.”
