The Emmys Exposed Hollywood’s Fear of Politics, and it was Embarrassing

1 Mins read

The 2025 Emmy Awards should have been a showcase of the best TV shows. Instead, it showed how Hollywood is afraid of its own voice. After Charlie Kirk was assassinated, America was on edge, and the Emmys moved towards forced smiles and awkward bits.

Hannah Einbinder, the Hacks star, yelled “f**k ICE and free Palestine” during her award speech. That was the only raw moment in an otherwise clean night. So why did the producers spend the rest of the show shutting down people who didn’t agree?

The Counter That Shut People Up

Host Nate Bargatze said the 2025 Emmy Awards would not be about politics. And true to his word, the directors came up with a stunt that looked more like censorship than time management.

Bargatze said he would give the Boys and Girls Club of America $100,000. He said he would take $1,000 from the charity for every second a winner went over 45 seconds. That’s when things got weird. Folks at home were then forced to watch dull speeches and a digital meter.

Things looked terrible, even though CBS still gave $350,000 in the end. It was clear that the producers just didn’t want to hear divisive political speeches.

Silencing the One Real Moment

Einbinder’s outburst was cut short when her mic was muted for TV. After all, it was different from Stephen Colbert’s speech about love, loss, and America’s fractured state. Einbinder was not allowed to speak, but Colbert was.

Most of the stars didn’t even talk about politics at all. No one talked about Kirk’s assassination or called out ICE or Gaza. They just said things that had no deep value and meaning.

There have never been any problems with Hollywood talking about politics. That they backed out now, when free speech is under the most attack, was just cowardly.

The 2025 Emmy Awards weren’t just awkward in the end; they were also telling. They showed an industry that was afraid to make waves. At the end of the day, the organizers might as well give an award to the censors who bleeped out the mast-daring moment of the night.
