High-risk pregnancy refers to a pregnancy that negatively affects the health of a mother, the baby, or both! before, during, or after delivery. High-risk pregnancy elicits a range of emotional and psychological experiences for the expectant mother. It can adversely encompass both the mother and the health of the baby. Medical research on high-risk pregnancies abounds, while women’s emotional/psychological experiences are not sufficiently documented, and hence much less attention and/or programming is directed to supporting women with high-risk pregnancies.
But, typically, special monitoring or care throughout pregnancy is needed. Mothers-to-be should understand the risk factors for a high-risk pregnancy, and what they can do to take care of themselves and their baby. Mind and Mom, M&M is a fem-tech healthcare company founded by Padmini Janaki, focusing on women’s health through their early reproductory years to make difference in menopause. It is a data-driven and AI-Driven wellness solution for women, delivering personalized fitness, nutrition, lifestyle, and wellbeing programs to optimize the health of women through every milestone of womanhood. Moreover, making the best & most affordable healthcare accessible to all Indian families right from preconception to parenthood & beyond.
According to Padmini, several components can make a pregnancy high risk, including existing health conditions, the mother’s age, lifestyle, and health issues that happen before or during pregnancy. She provides some probable factors that could create a high-risk pregnancy situation followed by the solutions to control them. “This is not meant to be all-inclusive, and each pregnancy is different, so the specific risks for one pregnancy may not be risks for another”.
She says, “one of the most common risk factors for a high-risk pregnancy is the age of the mother-to-be. About 13% of all pregnancies occur in adolescents. These girls are at increased risk of having Preeclampsia, Preterm labor, and Anemia. Part of the reason for these risks is that adolescents are less likely to get medical care during pregnancy. Thus, they may not understand what activities and behaviors can put their pregnancy at risk. Apart from that, a history of miscarriage, problems with a previous pregnancy, a family history of genetic disorders, reproductive abnormalities, and a few more are also risk factors for a high-risk pregnancy.
She continued that while many causes of a high-risk pregnancy are out of your control, there are things you can do to enable, and give yourself and your baby the best shot at an uneventful pregnancy and natural birth. For example, starting your pregnancy at a good weight, planning your babies for your prime childbearing years, telling doctors about preexisting conditions, and avoiding drinking & smoking. Padmini Janaki assists you to control the same through Mind & Mom as it helps reduce depression, increase baby health, boost a normal delivery, improve healthy weight, and ameliorate stillbirth and gestational hypertension.
