MEET CURTIS RAY: From Countertops to Compounder

5 Mins read

Most entrepreneurs build one successful business and stay in their lane.

Curtis Ray isn’t one of them.

Long before he became known for challenging conventional retirement planning and building a following of more than 1.5 million people on social media, Ray was hauling granite slabs, managing crews, and learning firsthand what it takes to build a business from the ground up.

Today, he is the founder and CEO of MPI® Unlimited, a two-time best-selling author, inventor, financial educator, and creator of one of the most talked-about financial strategies in the retirement planning space. But his journey didn’t begin in finance.

It began with countertops.

Built Different From the Start

While attending Arizona State University on a wrestling scholarship, Ray found himself presented with an opportunity that would change his life.

During a conversation with friends, he heard someone describe the growing demand for granite countertops. He knew virtually nothing about the industry, but the idea intrigued him.

Most people would have moved on.

Ray spent the next six months obsessively studying granite, importing, manufacturing, and remodeling. Then, at just 23 years old, he invested his $8,000 scholarship check and launched Ray Brothers Granite.

It was the first of many moments where he would bet on himself.

Balancing entrepreneurship with the demanding schedule of a collegiate athlete taught him lessons that would become recurring themes throughout his life: discipline, resilience, and an unwillingness to accept limitations simply because others did.

Those early years weren’t glamorous. They were spent solving problems, managing operations, and figuring out how to create value in a competitive marketplace.

But they revealed something important about Ray’s personality.

Whenever he encountered a system that seemed inefficient, his instinct wasn’t to work around it.

It was to improve it.

The Inventor Mindset

That mindset eventually led Ray beyond countertops and into manufacturing innovation.

After years of experience in the stone industry, he developed ForzaStone®, a patented thin natural stone system designed to simplify installation and address challenges that had long been accepted as unavoidable within the industry.

For many entrepreneurs, that achievement would have been enough.

For Ray, it was another example of a pattern that would define his career: identify a problem, question conventional wisdom, and engineer a better solution.

The industry changed.

The products changed.

But the way he thought never did.

Losing Everything Changed Everything

By 2014, Ray appeared to have achieved the entrepreneurial dream.

The granite company he launched while attending Arizona State University had grown into a thriving business generating more than $10 million in annual revenue. The company was profitable, expanding rapidly, and seemed poised for even greater success.

Then everything changed.

A dispute with a business partner escalated into a battle that ultimately cost Ray the company he had spent a decade building. Despite years of success and a net worth tied up in the business, he found himself draining his savings to keep operations running while fighting to protect what he had built.

By the end of 2014, after ten years of entrepreneurship, Ray had just $11,000 left in his bank account.

Rather than continue the fight, he made a difficult decision: he walked away and started over.

The experience fundamentally changed the way he viewed money.

“I realized I had spent years learning how to build wealth but very little time learning how to protect it,” Ray has said.

That lesson sparked a deep study of financial security, cash flow, compound interest, and long-term wealth preservation. What began as a personal search for answers soon evolved into a larger mission: helping others avoid the same mistakes and understand how money truly works.

That mission would eventually become MPI® Unlimited.

Building MPI® Unlimited

After rebuilding his life and business, Ray became increasingly focused on a question that had emerged from his own experience:

How could someone spend a decade building a successful company, generate millions in revenue, and still find themselves financially vulnerable?

The answer led him into an intensive study of financial principles, wealth preservation, compound interest, and retirement planning.

In 2018, Curtis and his wife Erin founded MPI® Unlimited to help individuals better understand the concepts that had transformed his own perspective on money. What began as a personal pursuit to avoid repeating past mistakes evolved into a mission to help families build greater financial confidence and long-term security.

Rather than focusing solely on products, Ray built the company around education—teaching people how money works, how compound interest impacts long-term outcomes, and why protecting wealth can be just as important as creating it.

Over time, what began as educational conversations grew into a national movement.

Today, MPI® Unlimited serves clients across the country and has become a recognized brand in financial education.

Taking Financial Education to the Masses

Ray’s ability to explain complicated ideas in simple terms helped him find an audience far beyond traditional financial circles.

Through books, webinars, podcasts, live events, and social media, he built a platform dedicated to helping people think differently about money.

His content quickly resonated.

Millions of views followed.

Then hundreds of thousands of followers.

Today, Ray has built a social media audience exceeding 1.5 million followers and has become one of the most recognizable voices discussing compound interest, retirement planning, financial literacy, and personal responsibility.

His style is straightforward, educational, and often challenging.

Rather than telling people what they want to hear, he encourages them to ask better questions.

The Wrestler Never Left

Those who know Ray well often point to wrestling as the foundation for much of his success.

As an Arizona State wrestler and All-American athlete, he learned early that achievement rarely comes from talent alone.

It comes from consistency.

From repetition.

From showing up when others don’t.

The same mindset that helped him compete at a high level in athletics later helped him build businesses, earn patents, write books, and create educational platforms that reach millions.

Even today, he continues to pursue difficult goals. Recently completing a sub-three-hour marathon, Ray views physical challenges the same way he approaches business: commit fully, stay disciplined, and trust the process.

More Than Business

Despite his accomplishments, Ray is quick to point to his family as his greatest source of motivation.

He and his wife Erin are raising five children in Gilbert, Arizona, where family remains at the center of everything they do.

It’s also one of the reasons he remains passionate about financial education.

For Ray, money has never been the destination.

Freedom is.

The ability for families to spend more time together, create opportunities for future generations, and make decisions from a position of confidence rather than fear.

What’s Next

Looking back, the defining moment in Curtis Ray’s career wasn’t building a successful company.

It was losing one.

That experience forced him to rethink everything he believed about money, wealth, and financial security. It taught him that building wealth and protecting wealth are not the same thing—and that many hardworking people spend years pursuing one while neglecting the other.

Today, through books, speaking engagements, digital content, and MPI® Unlimited, Ray continues to help people better understand the financial principles that emerged from his own journey.

From an $8,000 scholarship check invested in a countertop business to rebuilding his life after being left with just $11,000 in the bank, his story has never been about avoiding failure.

It’s been about learning from it.

And helping others do the same.
