Kentucky Derby Celebrates 150th Race: What You Should Know About The 2024 Edition

3 Mins read

When we talk about horse racing, what is the first thing that comes to mind? – Well, most people would say the excitement of the races and betting, but that is only a cover from what’s really sparking our feelings.

Horse racing is a sport wrapped in tradition. It is one of few sports that carefully nurtures history and heritage. This allows the sport to survive for years, and still be exciting as day one.

The Kentucky Derby proves this with its 150th year anniversary which is coming up in 2024. This is one of the biggest horse racing events in the world, and reaching the 150th race is a big milestone that needs to be celebrated.

Even though the race is scheduled for May, Churchill Downs is already preparing for the big event and looking for a way to make this event extra special. Whether you are betting online with TwinSpires or actually considering going to the event, there are a few things you should know about. Let’s go through what can we expect from the 150th Kentucky Derby in 2024.

Announcements

Churchill Downs has announced the start of a year-long commemoration of the 150th running of the Run for the Roses. The Kentucky Derby is the country’s longest-running sports event, having taken place every year since 1875, including despite World Wars and pandemics.

“150 years of tradition, hospitality and the best horse racing in the world takes center stage as the Kentucky Derby celebrates an extraordinary achievement. To honor the significance of the anniversary, the rich history of the Derby, and its place in our culture, we are excited to unveil new and enhanced guest experiences for decades to come,”  said Mike Anderson, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack.

The track recently launched a new website that details the unique experiences that will be available at Churchill Downs for the event on May 4, 2024.

New Guest Experiences

Churchill Downs is introducing numerous new visitor experiences for the Kentucky Derby 150, including additional amenities that will enhance the experience for practically every guest who enters the iconic racetrack’s gates. New spectacular vistas of the Twin Spires, increased social places, and rare behind-the-scenes chances will be among the enhancements.

The centerpiece is the nearly $200 million Paddock renovation, which will more than double the size of the walking ring for the horses, create approximately 3,600 new seats and 3,250 new standing room tickets, and deliver new premium club spaces, dining tables, and rail boxes.

Along with the Paddock, Derby 150 will feature new eating clubs and outdoor dining places for race spectators.

The Woodford Reserve Paddock Club and Paddock Club Enclosure: Both locations offer exclusive access to the paddock area via a secret tunnel, a “curated dining experience,” a concierge service, a private betting parlor, and a trackside view of the races.

1895 Club and Enclosure: This new club will provide spectators with a behind-the-scenes insight into equine life, including a view of the paddock runway and saddling stalls.

Spires Terrace and Suites: This is a first-time experience at Churchill Downs. This section will provide customers with an “outdoor luxury dining experience with a dedicated concierge team.” The apartments will be located beneath the Twin Spires and will provide a 360-degree view of the circuit and paddock.

New Outdoor and Luxury Dining Experiences

For the 150th Kentucky Derby, two new luxury dining clubs and an outdoor luxury dining experience will premiere, delivering a one-of-a-kind experience with unsurpassed views of both the new paddock area and the racetrack.

Derby Museum

Churchill Downs Racetrack cordially asks Kentucky Derby fans to remember December 6, 2023, as a countdown milestone signaling 150 days until the historic 150th running of the Kentucky Derby.

To commemorate the Race to 150, the Kentucky Derby Museum will be accessible to the public all day with free entry and entertaining Derby-themed activities.

The museum, which will be located on the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs, will provide fans of all ages with the opportunity to get into the Derby mood and kick off the historic countdown in style.

“Derby of a Lifetime” Experience

Churchill Downs will give fans the chance to win a “Derby of a Lifetime” experience to commemorate 150 years of horse racing and history. Fans will have the opportunity to win VIP Derby 150 tickets, Taste of Derby tickets, a Derby weekend hotel stay, flight and ground transportation, a unique Vineyard Vines fashion line, designer headgear, and exclusive trips to the Paddock, Stable Area, and the Kentucky Derby Red Carpet Experience.

Final Words

Today, the Kentucky Derby is the country’s longest-running annual sports event, having survived critical events in history like World Wars I and II, the Great Depression, and global pandemics.

The 150th Kentucky Derby will be held on May 4, 2024.

We are sure that this is going to be one of the biggest horse racing events in 2024 that you wouldn’t want to miss.
